[00:01.107]What is grit? [00:04.468]Good afternoon...
[00:01.107]What is grit?
[00:04.468]Good afternoon,everyone.
[00:05.863]Today,I would like to talk about my research project concerning the key to success.
[00:12.755]I would like to start my topic with my own story.
[00:16.460]When I was 27 years old,I left a very demanding job
[00:21.815]Teaching seventh graders math in the New York City public schools.
[00:27.440]And like any teacher,I made quizzes and tests.
[00:31.923]I gave out homework assignments.
[00:34.340]When the work came back,I calculated grades.
[00:39.231]What struck me was that IQ was not the only difference between my best and my worst students.
[00:47.497]Some of my strongest performers did not have superIQ scores.
[00:52.641]Some of my smartest kids weren't doing so well.
[00:57.078]Then I felt very interested in knowing the reason
[01:02.391]Why the students'math performance is not that closely related to their IQ scores.
[01:09.278]I started studying kids and adults in all kinds of challenging settings,
[01:15.529]And in every study my question was,who is successful here and why?
[01:23.014]My research team and I went to West Point Military Academy.
[01:28.404]We tried to predict which students would stay in military training and which would drop out.
[01:35.374]We went to the National Spelling Contest
[01:38.730]And tried to predict which children would advance farthest in competition
[01:43.433]We worked with private companies,
[01:46.245]Asking,which of these salespeople is going to keep their jobs?
[01:50.532]And who's going to earn the most money?
[01:54.356]We went to many places,
[01:56.613]And finally one characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success.
[02:03.973]And it wasn't social intelligence.
[02:07.779]It wasn't good looks,physical health,
[02:10.651]And it wasn't IQ.
[02:13.328]It was grit.
[02:16.871]What is grit?
[02:18.440]Well,grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals.
[02:25.371]Grit is sticking with your future, day in,day out
[02:30.366]Not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years,
[02:35.714]And working really hard to make that future a reality.
[02:40.588]Grit is living life like its a marathon, not a sprint.
[02:47.339]A few years ago,
[02:50.048]I started studying grit in the Chicago public schools.
[02:54.513]I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit questionnaires,
[03:00.550]And then waited around more than a year to see who would graduate.
[03:04.827]It turned out that grittier kids were significantly more likely to graduate
[03:10.688]Even when I matched them on every characteristic I could measure,
[03:16.140]Things like family income, test scores and so on.
[03:21.072]To me,
[03:22.565]The most shocking thing about grit is how little we know,
[03:26.903]How little science knows about building it.
[03:31.830]Every day,
[03:33.750]Parents and teachers ask me
[03:35.922]How do I build grit in kids?
[03:38.878]How do I keep them motivated for the long run?
[03:42.997]Our data show very clearly that there are many talented individuals
[03:48.764]Who simply do not follow through on their commitments.
[03:52.577]In fact,in our data,
[03:56.186]Grit is usually unrelated to measures of talent.
[04:00.280]So far,
[04:02.981]The best idea I've heard about building grit in kids is something called growth mindset.
[04:11.060]Growth mindset is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed,
[04:16.402]That it can change with your effort.
[04:19.243]Kids with grit are much more likely to persevere when they fail,
[04:25.016]Because they don't believe that failure is a permanent condition.
[04:29.777]So growth mindset is a great idea for building grit.
[04:35.610]But we need more
[04:38.144]And that's where I'm going to end my remarks
[04:41.482]Because thats where we are.
[04:43.409]That's the work that stands before us.
[04:46.902]We have to be willing to fail
[04:50.253]To be wrong,to start over again with lessons learned.
[04:54.879]As a conclusion,
[04:58.164]We need to be gritty about getting our kids grittier.
[05:03.907]Next time,
[05:04.874]I would like to share with my experience in building up students'grit.
