[00:02.145]Danke schon. [00:03.584]This time last...
[00:02.145]Danke schon.
[00:03.584]This time last year, everybody here in Aachen's Christmas markets in Germany
[00:07.899]were using up their old Deutschmark.
[00:10.130]12 months on, of course, they've all got well accustomed to euro notes and coins,
[00:14.879]but whether they really feel much affection for the new single currency,
[00:18.788]well, that's another matter.
[00:21.836]Take the storeholders here.
[00:23.654]The majority are German and whilst most of the shoppers are from neighbouring Belgium and Holland just a few miles away,
[00:29.569]there's still a lot of nostalgia for the Deutschmark.
[00:32.452]I'm a seller for candy and sweets and all the customers say 'oh, the euro is teuer,
[00:41.960]It is expensive, and then I think it is better we go back to the D-mark.
[00:47.914]Drinks have got more expensive when you go out.
[00:49.771]Everything's got more expensive.
[00:52.149]That is definitely one point, one aspect that I can see.
[00:56.358]There's been numerous complaints here in Aachen and elsewhere in the Eurozone,
[00:59.777]where the changeover to the euro has pushed up prices.
[01:02.896]Retailers deny it, but some countries like Belgium and Austria are lobbying the European Central Bank to print the one-euro coin as a note as well,
[01:12.154]to help people feel richer using the new currency.
[01:15.379]Away from the cash tills, though, there is more optimism for the euro.
[01:19.556]I don't really feel more European but I think it's a good thing,
[01:23.149]yes, I think, just like I said, it's for me because I do travel a lot and I do go and I have customers from Ireland and they are very happy.
[01:32.063]They say, 'We've got the euro, you know, we don't have to think in Deutschmark.
[01:36.261]And I think it's good for business and we are still waiting for Great Britain.
[01:42.036]So, there is some nostalgia still here for the Deutschmark,
[01:46.071]but overall people do say it's a good thing, the euro, for this region and indeed the whole of Germany,
[01:52.153]and they'd like to see other countries adopt the single currency.
[01:55.131]Of course Sweden votes next year,
[01:57.276]but there's still a big question mark over the UK.
[02:00.759]Angela Garvey, BBC News, in Aachen, Germany.
